How to Plan a Medical Simulation Center: From Curriculum to Acceptance

Plan a simulation center around curriculum and training workflows before selecting rooms, platforms and devices. Acceptance should demonstrate a complete teaching session, not only working equipment.

Describe observable teaching tasks

List courses, learner numbers, group sizes, facilitation and annual use before choosing equipment. Individual interviews, small-group response exercises and whole-class anatomy demonstrations require different rooms and devices.

INACSL simulation standards address measurable objectives, scenario design and debriefing. In project planning, connect each proposed module to a course, learner task and observable learning output.

Separate platform, content, device and space decisions

The platform organizes accounts, assignments and records. Content defines cases, scenarios and evaluation. Devices enable interaction. Rooms support safe use, observation, rotation and facilitation. These layers must work together, but implementation can be phased by curricular priority.

Reuse of equipment depends on compatibility, learning tasks and maintenance condition. Before connecting existing platforms, clarify interface documentation, account identifiers, score fields, authorization and failure handling. Integration is a defined engineering task.

For VR, projection, CAVE or LED systems, test actual teaching content for readability, interaction distance and group observation before finalizing specifications.

Validate a complete learning workflow

During pilot operation, have faculty assign a task, learners enter a session, the system record activity and faculty review the outcome, debrief and export a report. Define checks, responsibilities and issue records for each step.

Deliverables should match the agreed scope and can include equipment and content catalogs, roles and permissions, operation instructions, faculty training records, backup procedures and support contacts. Demonstration visuals and device counts alone do not establish teaching usability.
